Our Growing Health Outreach in Daly City
-
Sonny Wan, Cumberland Presbyterian Chinese Church
Our congregation’s health outreach in Daly City began four years ago when Grace Urban Ministries (GUM) invited me to serve as a Chinese translator at the Mission Street Health Fair, which was held at San Francisco Christian Center. I am glad that I went and served as a volunteer, because on that day I learned that a health fair can be a wonderful way to connect with the people in a community.
Therefore, last year I asked three Cumberland members with nursing backgrounds to meet with GUM and plan a mini health fair at our Daly City church facility. With their help, volunteers from Grace Fellowship Community Church, Redeemer Community Church, and Primera Iglesia Bautista came alongside us to help host a diabetes health fair last October. We served 80 guests on that day.
Seeing the good result, this year our church asked the principal of Woodrow Wilson Elementary School, which is located right across the street from us, about whether we could hold the health fair at the school facility to serve the school’s families and surrounding neighbors. And because the gracious hand of God was upon us, the principal agreed to let us use their facility without any charge. What resulted was a wonderful and growing partnership.
The community health fair was held on Saturday, October 15th and we served 150 guests. Approximately 66% of them have some kind of connection with the school. I’d like to thank Principal Brian Allen for opening the school to the community, and to give thanks to all the volunteers from Cumberland Presbyterian Chinese Church, Grace Fellowship Community Church, Redeemer Community Church, and Primera Iglesia Bautista for their service to the Lord. Praise God that we served well as a team. To God be the glory!
Just the beginning
Welcome to the GRIDD. Whether you want to learn more about the city, see how God is at work in and through His Church, or to simply catch up with what we’re up to and what we’re thinking about these days, we want the GRIDD to be of service.
