Theological Convening
Too often, the conversation of the American Church remains bound by the confines of the ideologies of left and right. Unable to transcend, or speak to, a contentious and divided polity, the Church remains innocuous, grievously lacking in what should be a distinctly Christian witness…and hope. As we seek to serve the Church’s mission in San Francisco, we are in need of the Church’s best theological thinking. Conversely, we can also play a role in “setting the table” for such inter-congregational dialogue around God’s Word and its missional implications.
Consultation on Congregational Life & Urban Mission
As a part of GUM’s 10th Anniversary Celebration, a consultation was held to reflect biblically on the relationship between the corporate life of a congregation and the engagement of the congregation with the city it lives in. Co-led by Dr. George Hunsberger of Western Seminary and Dr. Mark Lau Branson of Fuller Theological Seminary, several Bay Area pastors and congregation leaders gathered around this task. Immigration: Through an Ecclesiological Lens
Concerned about the growing proliferation of policies directly, and adversely, affecting the immigrant community in San Francisco, and the nation-at-large, GUM coordinated a gathering of pastors and congregational leaders, both Catholic and Protestant, to reflect theologically on the concept of citizenship, and the implications for the Church. Teaching was provided by Michael Budde, professor of ecclesiology and political science at De Paul University in Chicago.See the Photos

The most frequent question was how we…start raised-bed gardens. This got us thinking more about gardening as a way for us to connect with, and serve, our community…”
