Service Opportunity Coordination
Rather than serve the city as isolated units, congregations can work inter-dependently with other congregations, recognizing that each is part of a much larger body, that is, the Church. Because of our connection to several different congregations, GUM is able to help coordinate and facilitate the exchange of volunteers where there is needed assistance. Examples include:
Burmese Newcomers Workshop & Food Fair
In the East Bay, a church-based outreach to the growing Burmese community needed additional nurses, physicians and translators to provide on-site health examinations. Through GUM, a team was pulled together from San Francisco-based congregations to join this effort.
Health Day at Willie Brown Academy
At this grade 4-8 public school in San Francisco's Bayview, the school's health nurse and a local congregation jointly hosted a "health day" to provide the students with education about healthy eating and lifestyle. Because the event took place during the work day, volunteers from another congregation added additional "warm bodies" to serve alongside them. Learn More

"
Last Spring’s Health Day at Willie Brown College Preparatory Academy was our last. The school’s closure at the end of the 2010-2011 academic year marked the end of our church’s first exploration into neighborhood ministry. As I reflected on our six-year partnership with the Wellness Center at Willie Brown, I began to see how it had formed our view of partnership."
