Philosophy

GEMs Tutoring Program

Our congregation-based approach stems from an ecclesio-centered philosophy, a theological understanding of ministry that locates the Church at the center of God’s missional agenda. As Old Testament Israel was called apart to be “a light to the nations” by living as a God’s covenant people, the Church exists as a people living under the “new covenant” made possible by the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. Through the Crucifixion-Easter event, a sinful humanity is delivered from this present and evil age, making way for the restoration of human life as God intended, characterized by true justice and compassion.

Therefore, local congregations are the missional entities that give living, visible expression of this good news, or gospel, of deliverance. To be an ecclesio-centered nonprofit is to insist that service flow out of the gospel-shaped, gathered life of the congregation. It also means commitment to ongoing renewal, as an institution, by the liturgical rhythms and theological reflections of the Church.
