History
Christian in its vision and identity, GUM was founded by Grace Fellowship Community Church (GFCC), a local congregation committed from its inception to the two-fold questions of calling and context: “What does it mean to be the Church?” and “What does it mean to be the Church in San Francisco?”
Moving to the Mission District in 1992, the congregation began serving its neighbors, particularly the local public schools of the 16th Street corridor. Four years later, GUM was established to develop congregation-based community services as a way to embody the call of the Church in this particular urban context. Initially focused on building the neighborhood ministries of GFCC, GUM has more recently grown in its capacity to develop collaborative ministry efforts among a growing number of San Francisco area congregations.
